To investigate this, we are currently working on a case study about the hugely popular Spanish television series\u00a0<i>La casa de papel<\/i>, or\u00a0<i>Money Heist<\/i>\u00a0as it is dubbed in English speaking countries.<\/p>\n<p><i>La casa de papel\u00a0<\/i>revolves around a long-prepared, multiple-day assault on the Royal Mint of Spain.\u00a0The show has been a success in Spain and the international distribution rights have been acquired by Netflix shortly after the first two seasons concluded.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column_inner][\/et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_row_inner custom_padding=&#8221;0px|||&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Riga&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.5.1&#8243;][et_pb_column_inner type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; saved_specialty_column_type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;http:\/\/www.detect-project.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/La-casa-di-carta-pilot-1.jpg&#8221; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.5.1&#8243; box_shadow_style=&#8221;preset2&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;30px|||&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column_inner][et_pb_column_inner type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; saved_specialty_column_type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.5.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><em>La casa de <\/em>papel is, therefore, a perfect case study for the DETECt consortium for a variety of reasons. It is a prototypical example of the impact of contemporary production and distribution strategies. Netflix, a North-American company, allows the show to travel widely, thereby erasing European economic, cultural and linguistic barriers. Netflix\u2019s role in the success story of\u00a0<i>La casa de papel<\/i>\u00a0can hence not be overstated. At the same time,\u00a0<i>La casa de papel\u00a0<\/i>has done Netflix a lot of good too: Its success led Netflix to sign an exclusive contract with the show\u2019s creator, Alex Pi\u00f1a, for a third season. This might have played a role in Netflix\u2019s decision to locate its first European production hub in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column_inner][\/et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_row_inner custom_padding=&#8221;0px||0px|&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Riga&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.5.1&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;0px||0px|&#8221;][et_pb_column_inner type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; saved_specialty_column_type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.5.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the show sits well within current discourses of \u201cquality\u201d or \u201ccomplex television\u201d, such as genre hybridization, antiheroes, transnational acclaim, cinematic aesthetics, and a potentially populist agenda. It also contains a highly political subtext: some reviewers conclude that\u00a0<i>La casa de papel\u00a0<\/i>captures Europe\u2019s mood a decade after the crash and contains, to some extent, some critical commentary on the European financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>With the third reason to be globally released on Friday the 19th of July 2019, the DETECt consortium\u2019s main interest is to identify different types of written and audiovisual commentaries that are available online, in order to examine how fans and critics from European countries discuss\u00a0<i>La casa de papel\u00a0<\/i>and, most crucially, to understand if they perceive the series as distinctly European. Preliminary research conducted in Germany and Italy yielded very different results that correspond with a more general stance towards the European Union taken by the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column_inner][\/et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_row_inner custom_padding=&#8221;0px|||&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Riga&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.5.1&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;0px|||&#8221;][et_pb_column_inner type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; saved_specialty_column_type=&#8221;3_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.5.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>For a more refined European perspective, we will compare and contrast different types of sources, covering a large spectrum of viewers: newspapers and magazines online archives, online magazines, fan blogs, YouTube channels, and Facebook groups. In the frame of DETECt, our research on\u00a0<i>La casa de papel<\/i>\u00a0will cover several European countries thanks to the contribution of colleagues from France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, and Romania.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column_inner][et_pb_column_inner type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;
